Montgaillard
This is the village at the center of our 3* Ariege campsite. Take the time to walk along the banks of the river that crosses this village and to stroll through its narrow streets. Finally, be sure to visit the living museum of the Forges de Pyrène which will reveal the secrets of trades of yesteryear.

Foix
You’ll love wandering through its narrow shopping streets and admiring its imposing castle from the top of its rocky peak.

Saint-Girons

Historical places to visit

If you are a history buff, you will be captivated by the historic cities, castles and caves. Did you know that in the Middle Ages, Ariège was a Cathar hotspot? This religion was considered heresy by the Church and the Counts of Foix are renowned for having helped the persecuted by protecting them. If this history, that of your ancestors, interests you, here are some places that you should not miss under any circumstances:

The castle of Foix. Located 5 minutes from the Ariege La Roucateille campsite, it was the stronghold of the emblematic Gaston Foebus. Completely renovated in 2019, it now has a 2,000 m² museum and offers participatory workshops to practice archery and crossbow! You will enjoy discovering this place with your children!

Niaux cave. With a height of 55 m and a width of 50 m, it contrasts completely with the reception building located at its entrance. Inside the cave, there are no reproductions, but real paintings from prehistoric times. In short, it should appeal to the youngest, as well as the oldest.

The castle of Roquefixade. This castle was a high place of resistance for the Cathars considered heretics by the Church. You can visit it for free all year round.

Mirepoix. You will enjoy discovering the alleys of this charming town. In this historic medieval town, every Monday, on the main square, find one of the largest markets in the region.
