Ariège castles and caves you must discover
Ariège is a land of memory. In the Middle Ages, it was a stronghold of Cathar resistance: a fascinating history that can still be read in its stones. Exploring Ariège is like stepping back in time at every turn of the road.
On the castle side, don’t miss:
The Château de Foix
Just 5 minutes from the campsite, fully renovated in 2019, with a 2,000 m² museum, an immersive room, archery and crossbow workshops, and a family escape game. In August, the sound and light show is exceptional!
The last Cathar bastion, perched high up, accessible on foot from the village. Guided tours from May to September (€5.50 adults / €3 children aged 8 to 15).
Perched on a cliff with an unbeatable panorama, free access all year round.
In ruins but inhabited by free-roaming goats and llamas, with equestrian knight shows in summer (€4 adults / €1 children aged 10 to 18).
On the cave side, the Ariège underground holds wonders:
55 m high, 50 m wide, and authentic prehistoric paintings that will take your breath away (€14 adults / €10 children).
The largest cave in Europe, an unforgettable labyrinth of underground rooms and galleries (€12 adults / €8 children aged 6 to 12).
Classified as a Historic Monument since 1929, with paintings and models dating back 16,000 years (€9 adults / €5.50 children aged 5 to 17).
